Health Hazards Acute and Chronic:INHALATION: NOT LIKELY UNLESS MATERIAL
IS MACHINED/WELDED/REMELTED. EXPOSURE TO ZINC OXIDE FUME CAN RESULT
IN ZINC CHILLS (METAL FUME FEVER). TEMPORARY SYMPTOMS
(FEVER/CHILLS/NAUSEA/VOMITING/MUSCULAR PAIN). RECOVERY USUALLY
COMPLETE IN 24-48 HRS. EYE: IRRITATION WHEN WELDING/PLASMA CUTTING.
SKIN: BURN FROM HOT METAL.
Explanation of Carcinogenicity:NONE
Effects of Overexposure:INHALATION: UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT IRRITATION
FROM COPPER FUME. SKIN: IRRITATION.
First Aid
First Aid:SKIN: REMOVE PARTICLES BY THOROUGHLY WASHING W/SOAP & WATER.
EYES: FLUSH W/WATER FOR AT LEAST 15 INS. INHALATION: REMOVE FROM
EXPOSURE. OBTAIN MEDICAL ATTENTION IN ALL CASES.
Fire Fighting
Extinguishing Media:DRY POWDER OR SAND
Fire Fighting Procedures:DON'T USE WATER OR HALOGEN ON DUST FIRES.
Unusual Fire/Explosion Hazard:DAMP ALUMINUM DUST MAY SPONTANEOUSLY HEAT
W/LIBERATION OF HYDROGEN TO FORM EXPLOSIVE AIR MIXTURES. FLAMMABLE
SOLID. CONTACT W/AMMONIUM NITRATE CAUSES EXPLOSION.
Handling
Handling and Storage Precautions:MOISTURE MUST BE DRIVEN OFF PRIOR TO
REMELTING. DON'T TOUCH CAST ALUMINUM METAL/HEATED ALUMINUM PRODUCT
W/OUT KNOWING METAL TEMPERATURE.
Other Precautions:ALUMINUM EXPERIENCES NO COLOR CHANGE DURING HEATING.
SOME ALUMINUM SCRAP MAY BE CONTAMINATED W/OIL AT LEVELS >1%.
MELTING OF ALUMINUM SCRAP MAY GENERATE OIL VAPORS WHICH ARE
IRRITATING TO THE EYES & U PPER RESPIRATORY TRACT.
Exposure Controls
Respiratory Protection:AS REQUIRED.
Protective Gloves:AS REQUIRED.
Eye Protection:AS REQUIRED.
Other Protective Equipment:AS REQUIRED.
MELTING/CASTING/MACHINING/FORGING/OR OTHERWISE PROCESSING MAY
REQUIRED PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT.
Supplemental Safety and Health
HARD ALLOY INGOTS IN THE 2000 & 7000 SERIES MUST BE STRESS-RELIEVED TO
PREVENT EXPLOSION (OR VIOLENT CRACKING) WHEN SAWED. VAPOR DEGREASER
MUST BE PROPERLY MAINTAINED TO LIMIT THE ACCUMULATION OF ALUM INUM
FINES WHICH COULD RESULT IN A POTENTIAL DEGREASER FIRE OR
EXPLOSION.
